Kashmir Paper Mache

This mesmerising art originates from the paradise of India, Kashmir. The beauty of the Kashmir Papier Mache lies in how natural colours are used. It is said they protect the article from damage. Craft practitioners make use of colours which are extracted from minerals. Natural colours remain fresh for at least fifty to sixty years of use. The beauty of art is losing its essence as novel manufacturing techniques are taking over the carving techniques employed in Papier mache. In Kashmir, it was often called “Kari Qalamdane”.
