Phulkari embroidery

Phulkari, which means “the embroidery of flowers” originated in Punjab to celebrate the birth of a girl child in the belief that the girl child will create future generations. This folk embroidery of Punjab was limited to the state earlier, but today it is popular worldwide for its vibrant colours, unique floral motifs and other geometrical patterns. As per the origin story, women adorn phulkari dupattas to celebrate the birth of women and stand together in womanhood.
